From September 21 to 23, in London, will be held greengaged , a series of meetings and workshops dedicated to environmental sustainability in design, analyzed from every point of view (I will go to this ). Venue the Design Council price free (booking online). I wonder why in Italy, the only free workshops are only the demonstration of various equipment or software, all other costs are from € 150 / 200 up (with a few notable exception ). Do not think it's always been a frenzied search for money, such as Design for organized by Aiap is anything but that. I think it's an organizational issue. In London, the designers featured are all or most residents (ergo no charge for accommodation or travel, apart from charging the oyster or taxi). For us, however, they are called designers from around the world (which also says a lot about the "made in Italy") which, of course, you have to pay air taxis, lunches, dinners and hotels.

In addition, while the purpose of greengaged is to share more good design practices (that fucking term) and then the public is represented mainly by professionals, the workshops are aimed almost only Italian university students (in fact, from the point of view of the course seem more condensed and the true master of the workshop). What more if it were not that good then they, in part recover some credit, they are not able to put into practice what learned almost nothing and store it as any lesson, perhaps a bit more fun.

Wandering between sites sustainable graphic design (of course all made in UK) I came across an agency, to define innovative is an understatement. The name, Think Public, says a lot about what they mean by design and communication and, glancing at their site, you can make fairly accurate idea about their work, both as results as a method. Just curious because, during my brief trip to London in late August, I went to track them down and have a chat. Meanwhile, be in a study that only clients from the public sector (a term that encompasses both the public itself is the tertiary sector) is amazing. Even more astonishing the fact that the atmosphere is relaxed (not your Italian fooling around). But the truly amazing thing is the method, or the fact of involving stakeholders in the whole creative process.

Obviously the attempt, and the result is much more ironic. UGO for the time being are two, one called At the end of the day! where clicking on the characters, you can see what they are doing and read (the authors of the texts are credits in the link) and you can download the booklet pdf format.
The second, entitled (only) a scene from Q, is dedicated to the eponymous novel by Wu Ming and clicking on various links on the page you can download the novel itself, learn more about some pictures and some cultural contexts in the novel (like the Anabaptists or the printer / bookseller Peter Perna), or download a poster, 50x70, which is a short, funny scene with Perna as the protagonist.

Last February (public always do with some delay) I was in Sao Paulo, on a visit to a friend. To combine business with pleasure, by Giò Fuga , I contacted (before departure) L ' Tipografica Oficina do Sao Paul or run by Marcos Mello and Claudio Rocha (Director, inter alia, Tipoitalia ). After a couple of emails, Marcos asked me to participate in a workshop Printing lasting one day. Enthusiastic welcome and introduced me to Senai on Saturday (where the seat of the Oficina). Arrive an hour late, but despite this, the atmosphere is warm. Marcos introduced me to his two assistants and students, offers me coffee and biscuits and shows me all the space. The Oficina is housed in an industrial shed, very large, with a temperature similar to the Amazon rainforest. Apart from this detail, everything else is nothing short of extraordinary: full closets crammed with bills of every kind, two linotype fully functional (one Italian and one heildelberg can not remember the name), printing machines, tirabozze. In short, a classic pre-digital printing.
After a quick review of the theory and instrumentation, via the first year of free composition of characters. We say that could be better, there is the intention, familiarity with the characters to lead is yet to come. Lunch with two huge sfilatini by about one meter (seems to be common in Brazil) and guarana in rivers. Jacaré (I think you write well), the Director of linotype, you lancja in a series of anecdotes related to his work as a typographer, including the one from which it derives its name (if not always I misunderstood you Jacare was the name of the printing press on which he worked in the printing of a newspaper). Wanting a better look at all the Oficina, will prepare a very very simple and quite mysterious, and in the meantime I am continuing my work of "espionage." At the end of the day Marcos also shows us the pieces of decorative typographical late nineteenth century and a series of giant wooden character of Italian production. The day ends and, not satisfied with the workshop, lunch, cafes and business cards, Marcos offered to take me home.
We look to see us the next day or a week, on my return from Florianopolis and before my return to Italy. Unfortunately, we can not combine any of these things and we are only by phone shortly before departure.
And here are the tickets, with the matrix linotype mail address and various types of paper (including some made in the laboratory of paper Senai), arrived by mail the other day.

From April 3 to 9 last year, was held at the Red Gate Gallery of London, the exhibit of mail art organized by Darren Di Lieto, editor (s creator) of the portal, illustrators The Lit tle Chimp Socie ty . Among the various envelopes and various packages also appeared in the shape of a sax player.
In total it was over 600 works, 250 of which are collected in the homonymous catalog (yes, the shape is there too). Here

Cucina Napoletana / ME IN THE PASTIERA
A traditional recipe but in Naples each interprets in his own way is pastiera with cream, that of rice, one with more eggs and less butter or vice versa ... for sure there is one these days in every home in Naples. This is version of my mom.
INGREDIENTS:
500g of pastry FRESH OR FROZEN
to make them at:
-3 eggs-500g flour 200g sugar-
-150g butter
INGREDIENTS FOR PASTIERA :
- 750 grams of ricotta (preferably sheep)
-500 grams of sugar
-grain (cooked a pot)
-peel of a lemon
- 1 orange
-100 g of various candies (orange, cedar and cucuzzata)
-100 g of milk
-50-60g of butter
-6 eggs
-one packet of vanilla
-a vial of orange flower water
a vial of aroma- Orange
-cinnamon a pinch (not essential)
Put the corn in a saucepan with the milk, butter and grated lemon zest and cook until it becomes creamy.
Separately, in a large bowl place the ricotta with the sugar (if you make the icing is easier to mix with ricotta cheese) and mix to render homogeneous. Then add the yolks to the cheese and set aside the egg whites, vanilla, orange flower water vials and orange juice and half orange juice.
Stir the mixture well, until it is thin like a cream. Whip the egg whites until stiff and then incorporate the mixture. Turn over and pour the candied fruit cut into small pieces, cinnamon if you like, and the mixture with the corn in the meantime will be cold. Mix everything and turns preparing the pulp with butter.
Then roll out the pastry for good, so it is thin, the wheel cover and pour the mixture.
With the remaining pastry make regular strips to place on top as decoration.
Preheat the oven for a few minutes at 180 ° then put the pastiera to cook for an hour and a half. Allow to cool and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
Pastiera is ready but to be eaten the next day will be even better. Bon appetit!

Always with a lag: in December, was presented the book "From morning to the set of the set of Syrian" dedicated to 110 years of 'Asylum Aliprandi , a historic educational institution of the town of Giussano (MI) . The volume is a continuation of the exhibition held in April 2008 at the library Villa Sartirana of Giussano . In that case, the corporate image was an adaptation of a pre-existing project, not much fun and colorful. For the volume, having had a free hand, I decided to make it pop the unit using two basic colors (yellow and magenta) with a minimum percentage of black and going to isolate, with the rectangles, some details of the images. The result is below.
